What is a
PowerPoint
document?

PowerPoint is a tool for creating computer-based slide shows. These can be used for presentations, demonstrations, or web-based slide shows. A PowerPoint document is the computer file which contains the slide show, including graphics, animations, and sound (if any), as well as speaker notes.

How do I create
a document?

To create a new PowerPoint presentation, follow these steps.

1) Launch the PowerPoint application. You can do this in one of several ways; here are some of the most common.

- Choose PowerPoint from the Start menu:

  OR

- Click on the PowerPoint icon on the task bar:

    OR

- Double-click the shortcut on your desktop:

Once PowerPoint has launched, you will see the following dialog box:

2) Choose one of the four options, then click OK:

AutoContent Wizard — Steps you through the creation of the initial document, making suggestions on content and graphic design.

Design Template — Provides you with a skeleton presentation with no content. It lets you select a general design from a number of choices, and then you add the content.

Blank Presentation — Opens a completely blank document, with no text or graphic design.

Open an existing presentation — Opens an already existing presentation. (You can also simply double-click an existing presentation’s icon in order to launch PowerPoint and open the document in just one step, bypassing the above dialog box.)

When creating a new presentation, you will usually want to choose the Design Template option.
