Department Overview

The Department of Instructional Technology at Bloomsburg University emerged in response to the increasing need for professionals who can integrate interactive multimedia technology into educational and training environments.

The Instructional Technology program prepares three types of professionals:

  • Those who wish to enter a career in the training and development sector of business, industry, nonprofit institutions or government

  • Those who already work in training and development, but seek a formalized degree structured for their needs and further development

  • Those who wish to become instructional technology resource specialists in private, public or higher education

The curriculum concentrates on the application of the computer and other emerging technologies to education and training with an emphasis directed towards:

  • Design

  • Development

  • Production and evaluation of computer-based interactive multimedia courseware

Masters candidates have the opportunity to experience a variety of state-of-the-art interactive technology configurations using an instructional systems approach.

The Master of Science in Instructional Technology program at Bloomsburg University has become a nationally acclaimed, unique program for the preparation of "interactive multimedia technologists."

The program integrates:

  • Extensive training in instructional design and instructional computing with a general coverage of media

  • Communication skills

  • Human resource development

  • Multimedia management

The program emphasizes applied learning and cooperative teamwork. Students work individually and in teams to design and produce computer-based instructional applications founded on sound learning and instructional theories.

Instructional Technology students have full access to the IIT multimedia computer laboratory. The lab contains a balance of Windows-based and Macintosh computers, as well as flatbed scanners and both CD-ROM production and videodisk equipment.

Among its software holdings are:

  • Video-digitizing software

  • Web development applications

  • Avariety of graphics packages (including Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw!)

  • Authoring software (including Quest, ToolBook, Macromedia Director, and Authorware)

  • The lab will soon acquire CU-SeeMe capabilities

Graduate Assistants have the opportunity to improve their skills by designing and developing projects produced through Bloomsburg University's Institute for Interactive Technologies.
