Course
Goal
This course serves to introduce and provide experience with the systems
approach to the design of instruction and training. The major components
of instructional design models, along with their respective functions
will be presented. This is an applications course that provides both introductory
information and application of skills and techniques necessary in the
design, development, and evaluation of sound instructional products. These
skills are particularly pertinent for efficient and cost effective development
of effective solutions to novel instructional problems.
Course
Objectives
At the
end of the course, each student will be able to:
- Demonstrate
an understanding of the instructional design process.
- Identify
and summarize the major elements commonly included in instructional
design models.
- Define
terms used in the instructional design process.
- Demonstrate
the following competencies in the completion of an instructional design
project:
- plan
an instructional needs assessment
- identify
an instructional problem
- conduct
an instructional task analysis
- analyze
the learner and instructional context
- specify
terminal and enabling learning objectives
- design
criterion measures
- select
and design appropriate instructional strategies
- select
and design appropriate instructional media
- construct
a prototype product
- prepare
appropriate testing instruments and procedures

On-line Discussion/Participation (10%) Students will contribute
to the scholarly dialog by preparing a list of issues, reflective statements,
and/or responses to assigned reading materials and on-line presentations
of their work. Additionally, students will participate in on-line chats
and Centra lectures/discussions.
Weekly Individual Assignments (20%) Each week students will
complete homework assignments, which are posted on Blackboard.
On-line Group Projects (20% total) As a part of a team, each
student will collaborate on one on-line project, which will be posted
for review by peers.
Individual Projects
Students will develop a Instructional Design Project based upon
a topic assigned by the instructor. The project will entail the major
aspects of an instructional design project as indicated in the grading
rubric above. Students will post their project work on their web site
for peer and instructor review.
Student Responsibility
Students will be held to high standards of academic excellence and to
codes of behavior outlined in the college handbook including guidelines
for plagiarism and academic honesty.
