If you
are interested in some drill and practice types of practice
activities, there is a wonderful software program called Hot
Potatoes (http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/hotpot/)
that is free and easily creates web delivered practice exercises.
Below
are examples of some of the types of exercises the Hot Potatoes
software can create:
These
exercises do "grade" the students responses and
can provide feedback, but there is no way to save the individual
results for the exercises. So if you use them in your lessons,
there is no way to document that a student actually completed
the exercise. (but of course, you don't have
to tell them that)
The Hot
Potato site is very user friendly, and contains all the information
you need to download and use the software. On the main page
of the Hot Potatoes site are three very important links: Download
Versions, Get a Registration Key, and Tutorials.
My recommendation is to do the following:
- Click
on the Download
Current Versions of Hot Potatoes to actually download
the application to your computer.
- Click
on the Get
a Registration Key link. To fully use the software,
you must register it by completing a simple online form,
and they will send a registration number to your e-mail
account. Once you have the number, follow the instructions
in the Hot Potatoes Help file to enter it into one of the
programs
- Work
through the online tutorials.
They are very clear, helpful, and makes using the software
very easy!
- Create
your own activities for your course. Once you have created
your activity, you will save it as a Hot Potato file.
These files can be changed and edited anytime you want.
- When
you are ready to create the web version of your activity,
save the file as html files or dhtml files.
- Link
these html files to any type of web page. (note: if you
create something like the Drag and Drop exercise I
demonstrated
above, it requires additional image files. Be sure to keep
these special image files together.)
