Online Surveys

Surveys are terrific tools for collecting opinions, ideas, self-evaluation, and ratings. A survey is a set of non-graded questions - sometimes submitted anonymously and sometimes submitted with a name or ID.

There are many commercial applications for creating surveys, but I have also found a site that allows you to create free web delivered surveys. This site is called Zoomerang.com

To create and administer surveys created at Zoomerang you must first enroll as a member. This is free, so don't worry about enrolling. There is an advanced level of enrollment that does cost money, but you certainly do not need that level of membership.

Once you are a member you can follow the online process of creating a survey using their templates. It will direct you through each phase of the process, and at the end will give you a web address to use to access your survey. This web address is what you will use on your web site.

(Just a note - when you create a free survey at Zoomerang, it is only active for 10 days. You can however create a new survey based on the initial one.)

Below is a link to a survey I created at Zoomerang.com. Please click on the link and complete the survey.

Online Polls

Another great way to add interactivity to your site is to use a "Web Poll", similar to the one on the right. These web-based polls are a great way to let people "vote" or express their opinion on a specific topic and then see how others have voted as well. As you know, I like to include a "poll of the week" on the main page of this web site.

While the cumulative results are tallied, this is a non-graded poll and there is no way to know how individuals voted.

There are several versions of these polls, some free, and others that have a rather hefty price tag. I've found one very good site that lets you create polls at no cost, and will collect results for two weeks. The name of the site is Free Polls.

If you use this site, you will first create an account, then can create your web poll. It has a very simple set of steps to complete, and at the end of the process will give you the HTML code to add to your web page to show the poll.

What do I do after this lesson?

Go back to your eLearning Course Worksheet, and identify what topics would benefit from a poll or survey.

Think of some interesting questions you could include in a survey - related specifically to your content. Using the Zoomerang site, create a survey with at least 5 questions. Be sure to note the link to the poll, so you can add it to your lesson materials.

Also think of a question that could be presented as a quick poll for your class. Using the Free Polls site, create a quick poll with one question and at least four choices. Be sure to note the link to the poll, so you can add it to your lesson materials.
