Bloomsburg University
Department of Instructional Technology

Graduate students from the Master of Science in Instructional Technology are producing Instructional Games for one of their graduate classes. Recently they presented their first prototype of their Instructional Games. The course, Instructional Game Development, was developed by Dr. Celina Byers fall of 2005 as a response to a direct request from the department's Corporate Advisory Council. Since the fall of 2007, Dr. Byers has been offering the course online.
This course examines the theory and practice of instructional game design. Students conduct a needs analysis, produce design documents, produce prototypes, acquire client signoffs, and produce a self-contained instructional game.

The design team that has been selected for this project consists of five members. Each member of the team has been assigned one of four main roles: project manager, instructional designer, graphic designer, and developer.
Project Manager

The role of the project manager is to oversee the overall development of the project and to delegate tasks to individual team members. In addition to this, the project manager will also serve as the main person of contact between the group and the client. As such, the project manager is responsible for setting meeting times for the group as well as meetings between the group and the client. The project manager will also be responsible for ensuring that each task is completed and submitted on or before the due date. David Tomczyk is the project manager for our group. He is a PhD candidate at George Washington University, studying the effect of video games on people's proclivity towards entrepreneurship and how well such games prepare players in entrepreneurial skills, behaviors, and attitudes. He has a BA from Denison University in Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics (minor in Religion and some Astronomy research to his name), and an MA in Economics from Miami University in Ohio. He currently works at NASA, helping to prepare the Agency for transitioning from the Space Shuttle to the Constellation Program.
Instructional Designers

The instructional designer will be responsible for developing instructional aspects of the game. This can include developing a learner profile, outlining the content to be addressed within the context of the game and assisting with developing game objectives, rules and the prototype. Two team members have been assigned the role of instructional designer, Brandie Shatto and Alexis Leslie. Brandie is a full time Middle School English teacher who enrolled in the IIT program in Summer 2007. She has a Bachelor of the Arts in English from Shippensburg University. She has previously worked on the development of a website designed to educate potential businesses about the benefits that can be obtained from participating in the internship program with Bloomsburg University. This will be her second time working as an Instructional Designer for a project for Bloomsburg University. Alexis is a Preschool teacher and a full time student in the Instructional Technology program at Bloomsburg University. She has a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education from Bloomsburg University. This is her third time working as an Instructional Designer on a project for Bloomsburg University.
Graphic Designer

The graphic designer will be responsible for producing visual solutions based on the needs communicated by the client, mixing creative skills, proficiency in industry accepted software packages and marketing trends. The graphic designer will design the background of the game as well as other graphical elements such as characters and other additional objects such as interface and navigation. Wanda Simpson is the Graphic Designer for this project. She is the coordinator for the computer education department at West Virginia University Hospitals. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh and an Associate degree in Instructional Sciences Technology from Penn State University. Currently, she is progressing through the Masters program for Instructional Technology at Bloomsburg University. Wanda has been the creative lead on many web and eLearning high profile projects and has developed strong communication skills maintaining good working relationships with challenging clients.
Developer

The developer will be responsible for managing the creation of the game and all technical aspects related to development of the game. Christine Hufford, the Instructional Developer, is a fulltime student in the Instructional Technology program. She has an Associate degree in Photography from Luzerne County Community College, and a Bachelor degree in Art Studio from Bloomsburg University.
